This work is concerned with exploring our complex relationship to chaos theory where a small almost insignificant change can cause or contribute to a much bigger and potentially hugely significant effect elsewhere. This theory, first explored by Norton Juster in the 1960’s has had a long-term fascination with me and my work explores the oft-cited example of butterflies and the effect their movements have on wind turbulence. I used this concept to express how any small act by mankind that destroys the environment could lead to a huge disaster in the world in the future.

I began by experimenting with paper cutouts and attempted to articulate their movements by creating a mobile effect. I chose cardstock and mirrored paper to create the butterflies to give them a reflective effect. The butterfly from different angles will reflect the colours of the other butterflies and it will become cluttered, suggesting the influence of the environment. This approach had limited success as the paper cut-outs were clumsy and lacked elegance but these experiments led me to try an interactive approach to create movement by using touch sensors. I created the interactive features of the installation by using the combination of Touchdesigner and Arduino. This also enabled me to consider audience interaction and participation in controlling the movement of the butterflies.
